Helen asks…
How do I build/run a gaming server? Linux? CPU? Ram?
I’m just getting my feet wet with PC gaming and I’m looking to build a gaming server with some spare parts lying around the house… AMD 1700+, 512mb ram, 40 gig hard drive, high speed cable connection. I would prefer to use a linux OS(suse) so I woundn’t have to pay for windows. I’m not looking to build anything superior, just something to run dedicated servers for Half Life, Counter Strike, and Halo(not all at the same time). Is this possible with this hardware? If not, what would I need? Thanks, Jim
My “budget” rig:
AMD Athlon XP 2800 Barton @ 2.17
Asrock K7S41GX mobo
512 ddr 400
40 gb maxtor
Gigabyte GeForce 6200 128mb
Aspire X-Qpack w/430 psu
Acer 8ms 19″ widescreen LCD
P.S. Any additional gaming tips would be much appreciated : )
Ed answers:
You’ll need more RAM, espcially if you want many people on.
Do you have a static IP? If not, then you’ll need a dynamic dns software from sites such as http://www.dyndns.com/.
But why bother with a server. If it is just your friends, use hamachi (http://www.hamachi.cc/)

John asks…
Which of these Distros should I choose for my Linux web server?
I am ordering a dedicated server and have the option to choose one these for the OS:
FreeBSD 7.2
Debian 5.0.1
CentOS 5.3
They are all the latest stable release. So which should I choose, which would be the best for handling heavy traffic, and security?
Ed answers:
OK….So the two answers you have so far is a guy recommending a distro he’s admittedly never used before and another for a distro that isn’t even in your list of choices.
I’ve been a UNIX and Linux administrator for several years and used all of these operating systems. At work I have CentOS on several boxes running webservers and they are flawless with more than 10000 hits on it every day. FreeBSD is as solid as an OS gets but harder to find apps if you want to turn your webserver into something else later. Debian is rarely used for any enterprise system.
From my system administration and hands on experience with all of these choices I would go with CentOS.

James asks…
linux…which fedora should i get ?
im about to get a linux dedicated server with fedora 7 install is it stable? or should i get like 8 or 9??
Ed answers:
I think you should get Fedora 9. Fedora 8′s support is ending soon, and packages for Fedora 10 might not be stable until January.
Fedora 7 – no longer supported. (no security updates and I doubt the repos are still online)
Fedora 8 – Support is ending around December this year.
Fedora 9 – Supported until June 2009.
Fedora 10 – Stable release on the 25th next month. Packages might break something or give problem.
Also have a look at Cent OS. Its Red Hat under the hood, but free.

Paul asks…
I am planning on getting a dedicated server, what do you recommend?
I have a small webdesign studio and I need the server to host my clients. The best deal I’ve found so far is godaddy.com what do you think of that company?
What I need is:
- Linux server with cPanel and unlimited domains
- low cost
- great stability, speed and great service
what do you recommend?
Ed answers:
Yes, godaddy is very good, their brand is well known and reliable. So I think they can’t offer bad service.
Go with Godaddy, or you could try – http://tinyurl.com/spydh – I’ve heard people saying good things about them. I haven’t bought a dedicated server, but I have some websites on their hosting. Works good.
Regards

Chris asks…
Where can I find a download for a minimal installation of Apache web server for Linux?
I am trying to get a minimal installation of Apache web server. The reason for this is because, I plan on install it on a dedicated server and the only purpose is to serve basic image files. I need it to be as optimized as possible since it will be handling a few hundred of requests per second on average.
Ed answers:
the best two resources to try first

no in cron log there is no error showing…

Looks like syntax of crontab is correct.
Check wat error you are getting in log file /var/log/cron, i guess you might be getting some errors.
If there is some problem with syntax crontab -e will not allow to saw.
