Joseph asks…
how are the seattle seahawks alive for the playoffs at 5-8?
I’m just puzzled how they are mathematically alive. They can’t win the last wildcard because they would lose a tie breaker against the Cowboys and they probably would lose the tie breaker vs. The Cardinals and 49ers for the division – anyone have an answer?
Ed answers:
The reason the Seahawks are still alive is because of the Atlanta Falcons.
Now, for the explanation.
First you are right, they cannot win their division, and true, they lose the tiebreaker to Dallas. However, the tiebreaker is set up as divisional first, then the entire conference. This means that a team has to win a tiebreakers over any divisional opponents before they can participate in tiebreakers against teams from other divisions.
So, from the beginning if the Seahawks finish 8-8, the 49ers have to have a worse record. If the 49ers finished 8-8, they would win the tiebreaker, and Seattle’s playoff chances would end without even having a tiebreaker against Dallas. Heading over to the East, Seattle needs Philadelphia to win the division and, of course, Dallas needs to finish 8-8. However, Seattle would lose the tiebreaker to Dallas, thus they NEED the New York Giants to to finish 8-8 as well. A NYG/DAL tiebreaker is won by the Giants. (Head-to-Head).
So now, the Seahawks and the Giants are 8-8. To review, the order of the first three wildcard tiebreakers is
1. Head to Head (Seattle never played New York)
2. Conference record (both teams 6-6)
3. Common Games (minimum four games)
Common games is the record teams have of against common opponents. Between New York and Seattle there are five common games.
New York: (DAL, DAL, ARZ, TB, MIN)
Seattle: (DAL, ARZ, ARZ, TB, MIN)
New York comes out on top having a better common game record even if they lose to Minnesota they would be 3-2, compared to Seattle’s 1-4 So, now the only way around this roadblock, is to hope another team from either the North or South division finishes 8-8, has a 6-6 record, and has less then four common games. The only team to fit that bill is Atlanta, if they beat Tampa Bay and go 1-1 against the Jets and Bills. Therefore, if Seattle, New York Giants, and Atlanta all finish 8-8, the tiebreaker goes down to strength of victory.
The strength of victory tiebreaker compares the tied team’s record of all the teams each team has won against during the season. So for Seattle, their current strength of victory record is 16-49 which is the total wins and losses of the Rams, Jaguars, Lions, the Rams again, and the 49ers which are the five teams they won against. Now, or course, to even get to this point they would have to beat Tampa Bay, Green Bay, and Tennessee, which would bring their record to 33-71.
For Seattle’s sake, we will assume the Giants get their 8th win against the Redskins, and the Falcons beat the Bills as well as Tampa Bay (which was needed for Atlanta to have a 6-6 conference record.) This would give us:
Seahawks: 33-71
Giants: 38-66
Falcons:34-70
As you can see, the Giants have a five game lead, but with three weeks left in the season, the teams that Seattle beat, might improve their record, thus improving Seattle’s strength of victory. Therefore, there is a chance hat Seattle may win this tiebreaker, thus currently keeping them alive for the playoffs.
Remember, to even get here, the following must happen:
Seattle, Dallas, New York Giants and Atlanta all must finish 8-8 with Atlanta beating Tampa Bay
San Francisco, Carolina, and Chicago all must finish below .500

Charles asks…
how come the seattle seahawks didnt have any players in the top 100 list?
they were only 1 of 2 teams not to have any players on the list which is weird because they made the playoffs.
